Stay with Toulon, or link up with Australia and face another massive pay-cut.

There’s been much speculation recently as to why Matt Giteau hasn’t joined up with the Wallabies training camp. Drew Mitchell, Adam Ashley-Cooper and Will Genia have all joined up from France as Michael Cheika begins his preparations in defence of the Wallabies Rugby Championship title, but Giteau is yet to fly over.

Reports from French media are now indicating that Top 14 club Toulon attempting to block the return of 102-cap veteran Giteau to the Wallaby set-up. Should Giteau link up with the Australian team for the Rugby Championship, he could potentially miss the opening eight rounds of the Top 14 championship and Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal isn’t happy.

Giteau was forced to take a €250,000 pay-cut for taking part in the Rugby World Cup last year and could face further cuts if he joins up with his national side once again. Giteau has openly admitted he would like to continue with Australia with the ARU creating the ‘Giteau Law’ in order to allow player’s such as himself to continue playing for Australia while based in Europe.

This latest bully tactic from Boudjellal however has cast serious doubt over Giteau’s future as he may not be able to take such a huge financial hit again.
