Peter O’Mahony was out to prove a point last night.
The Munster flanker has failed to make his way back in Joe Schmidt’s plans in recent weeks such is the ridiculous depth in Ireland’s back-row. Ireland now have the likes of Jamie Heaslip, CJ Stander, Sean O’Brien, Josh van der Flier and O’Mahony all fighting for just three spots.
O’Mahony wasn’t named in Schmidt’s original squad for the Australia game but was awarded a spot on the bench with Sean O’Brien being forced to pull out just hours before the game due to a late tweak, and when he finally got on the pitch, he was out to prove a point.
Two massive carries in the space of thirty seconds, sitting down Reece Hodge in the process helped set-up Ireland’s match clinching try by fellow Munster man Keith Earls. How the hell Schmidt is going to pick a back-row come Six Nations is beyond us.
Who would you start in the back-row for Ireland in the Six Nations?
