The British & Irish Lions will be a lot more confident after seeing Ireland slay the All Blacks last weekend.

Joe Schmidt’s men ended a 111 year wait, grabbing five tries in a 40-29 win in a game that will live long in the memory for Irish rugby. The British & Irish Lions travel to New Zealand next summer for a three-test series and many are now suggesting after last weekend’s performance, Ireland’s influence will be much greater than initially expected.

The likes of Conor Murray, CJ Stander and Robbie Henshaw have put themselves up for serious contention for a test spot, but what about the coaching set-up next summer? Surely a member of the Irish set-up will be brought on the plane.

Andy Farrell was part of Gatland’s team last time round in 2013 and they triumphed over Australia thanks to a 2-1 series win. Farrell was applauded for his input and has done an excellent job with Ireland since taking over as their defence coach in the summer.

Will Gatland bring him in 2017? When asked by the Daily Mail’s Chris Foy, the Kiwi had this to say:

I’ve spoken about continuity of staff and adding some fresh faces. That defensive performance was very good…

We’ll wait and see. He is someone who achieved a huge amount as a player, for Wigan and Great Britain. When he speaks to the players, he brings out a lot of those experiences he had in the past, and that has an impact. It often hits the right note and he delivers really well to the squad.

Do you think Farrell should be considered for a role next summer? After last weekend, he has to be considered.
