Virimi Vakatawa has been fined €125,000 for not honouring a pre-contract agreement he signed back in 2013.

The French wing, who was his national side’s standout player in the recent autumn international series, was playing his rugby with rivals Racing 92 at the time. Instead of signing with Toulon chose to walk away from the fifteen a side version of the game and take up sevens with the national side.

Vakatawa became a star with the sevens team, before his shock call-up to Guy Noves’ Six Nations team this year. The winger was one of the few positives to come from a disappointing tournament and has been been labelled as the French answer to All Black Sonny Bill Williams.

Vakatawa continues to impress for France’s national side, even though he is yet to sign for a Top 14 club. He also still plays sevens and recently turned out for France in the Dubai Sevens tournament.

Quade Cooper similarly tried to go back on a pre-contract agreement with Toulon but ended up playing for the French side in a disappointing one-year stint.
