Ronan O’Gara On Coming Home And Working Alongside Paul O’Connell

Dream team.

Former Munster and Ireland outhalf Ronan O’Gara has left the door open for a possible ‘dream team’ coaching ticket alongside former teammate Paul O’Connell with Munster or Ireland at some stage down the line.

O’Gara is currently working as an assistant coach with the Crusaders in New Zealand having cut his teeth with Racing 92 in France’s Top 14. O’Connell meanwhile recently took on his first full-time coaching role with Stade Francais as their forwards coach.

Speaking at Off The Ball’s Roadshow in Limerick last night, O’Gara admits he does miss home.

“Seeing those moments in red and green, of course you’re going to. If it’s your home place, you’d love to do well because you can potentially rekindle that connection with the supporters and get that fortress going,” he said.

“You look at the Limerick hurlers this year and I was in Kerry but I was in tears watching it, kind of going, ‘Is there something wrong with me?’”

“I think there’s something beautiful about Irish sport on a day like that and obviously they know where they’re coming from but to an outsider this is quite amazing.”

On the prospect of working with O’Connell – O’Gara reckons it could definitely work between the two.

“There’s a lot of big ifs in there. I would obviously enjoy it because Paul is a perfectionist and he has a brilliant outlook on the game. So would it work? In my eyes, yes of course,” O’Gara added

“It would be interesting in years to come to work with Paul, yeah.”
