Now before we begin, this is just our two cents, and of course everyone is not going to agree, so feel free to let us know who your top 5 are.

Who are the top 5 rugby players in the world right now, irregardless of position? It’s a difficult question to answer, and is no doubt up for debate, but we’ve decided to have a go at it anyway.

Taking the All Blacks current dominance in World Rugby, they of course dominate the list, with four current All Blacks and one former one. It’s almost impossible right now to pick players from any other nation given their current dominance, but if you have any suggestions, once again- feel free to let us know.

retallick

5. Brodie Retallick

The 2014 World Player of the Year is still just 25 years of age and arguably the best lock in the world right now. An exciting attacking option and imposing force in the lineout, Brodie Retallick has established himself as a key member of the All Blacks lineout with his power, mobility and aerial skills complementing his athleticism and rugged defence. No doubt one of the world’s very best right now.

4. Kieran Read.

The current All Blacks captain has taken over the helm from Richie McCaw with ease. A dominant player across the field and a master of the role of the modern number 8, Kieran Read turns in consistently outstanding and athletic performances on the field, complemented by his leadership skills and professionalism.

barrett

3. Beauden Barrett

When Dan Carter retired from international duty after the 2015 Rugby World Cup there was a massive hole to be filled in the All Blacks backline. Beauden Barrett realised that opportunity this season and has transformed himself into arguably the most in-form ten in the world right now. A mercurial player, Barrett has led the Hurricanes to a Super Rugby title this year and the All Blacks to a Rugby Championship with two game to spare.

2. Dan Carter

The current world player of the year may have hung up his international boots but can still mix it with the very best. In his first season with Racing 92, he led the French side to a Top 14 championship and a Champions Cup final. Arguably the greatest ten to have ever player the professional game, Carter still has a couple of years at the top left in him and shows no signs of slowing down.

smith

1. Ben Smith

Spectacular speed, sound defence and reliability under the high ball has made 2016 All Blacks Vice Captain Ben Smith a great choice at wing, fullback or centre – and it’s that versatility that makes him a regular selection in the All Blacks starting XV. Smith is simply mesmerising to watch and in many people’s books, including ours- the world’s best player right now.
