Leigh Halfpenny finally resolved his future this week by signing for the Scarlets in a dual contract deal with the Welsh Rugby Union. The Lions fullback had been without a club after being released by Toulon, and it seems his indecision has cost him quite a few quid.
Halfpenny was offered a number of deals last season, including a £420,000 a year offer from the WRU to resign for the Cardiff Blues. But his failure to make a decision left him without a club up until this week, with The Rugby Paper reporting that the WRU got him on the cheap as a result.
The deal to bring the Welsh fullback home is said to be worth £200,000 less than the original deal, with Halfpenny signing a three-year deal worth £350,000 a year. That’s £70,000 less a year over three years.
That however, pales in comparison to the drop in wages having left Toulon. Halfpenny was earning £600,000 a season with the French giants, and apparently lost out on a £750,000 contract.
