It has been announced that the new Japanese Super Rugby franchise will be called the Sunwolves, SANZAR has revealed.

The name was picked from 3,320 suggestions by fans, and is a mix between ‘Land of the Rising Son’ and wolves; showing bravery, strength, and an ethos of teamwork.

The Sunwolves will take part in the Africa 1 Conference of Super Rugby, along with the Bulls, Cheetahs, and Stormers. They will play their first ever match on Saturday 27th February against the Lions in Tokyo. On April 8th, they will travel to South Africa to take on the Stormers, who will be managed by current national coach Eddie Jones.

This announcement is another step in the right direction, as popularity of the sport thrives in the country that will be hosting the World Cup in 2019. For everybody who has fallen in love with Japanese Rugby in recent weeks, this is yet another avenue to get behind the country that looks set to be a major force on the international scene in the future.

There will also be an Argentinian side taking part in Super Rugby next year. This franchise is yet to be named, with rumours that they will be dubbed Los Jaguares.
